Abstract: The technical development in medicine has in many fields improved diagnostics, but the apparatuses have also become more difficult to understand. The doctors are required to develop a technical way of thinking that contradicts holistic thinking, which includes the biographical and social dimensions of disease and health. The aim of recovery is replaced by normalisation of diagnosis. However, a doctor's judgement cannot be replaced by technical methods of examination. The doctor's experience should rather be applied to decrease an extensive use of technical methods. For that purpose the disconnection of work and income would be necessary in the medical field. The present system one-sidedly rewards the application of technical apparatuses. The lack of nursing staff is not only caused by the financial underrating of that work but it also expresses a deeper crisis of meaning. Medicine which mainly consists of technology cannot produce humane health care. lt needs to be demanded that functional care is replaced by patient-oriented care.
