Abstract: On the scale of specialisation of genetically programmed ways of behaviour, man is extremely non-specialized. This is also the case for the ability to adaptation to stress, which means that the competence for adaptation, has to be learned a new by each individual. On the one hand, this enables the species man to react fast and flexibly to new strains - which he has mainly created himself - thus guaranteeing propagation of the species. But an the other hand, man is supplied insufficiently organismically for individual survival, which these days is rated higher.Insufficient ability to cope with stress has effects an physical and psychological health. A better competence for adaptation as an ability to evaluate straining situations positively, and not to react to them passively and with flight, and to avoid self-reproach can be seen as an indicator for good psychological health. The main task of stress research is to explore such connections, even though medicine and psychology cannot compensate for the continuous production of new stresses (such as environmental problems) without any limits.
