The use of alternative treatments in the Danish adult population

Abstract: Alternative treatment by alternative health practitioners is legal in Denmark. This practice is regulated by the Medical Act which governs the practice of medicine and the law concerning drugs, including natural remedies. This legal approach is founded on the premise that no one shall be hindered in seeking help where they can find it. Non-Danish citizens must reside in Denmark for ten years before they can practise.Alternative treatments are used in combination with traditional health services, and not instead of those services, although alternative health care is costly. Rather than choosing an alternative treatment because of dissatisfaction with orthodox medicine, patients choose an alternative treatment for a specific illness.Alternative health care is seen by the population as a legitimate form of treatment, It is only the established professional groups who perceive 'alternative' care as 'alternative' ie. something with which they must compete.
