Abstract: Diagnostic means preconditional for any well-founded and purposeful therapy. With chronic diseases in particular, an optimal treatment can only be guaranteed if the cooperation between doctor and patient is good. Successful cooperation, however, is often hindered by a limited range of vision, an the doctor's behalf, who perceives an image of the patient which is too stereotyped.A person's behaviour during disease is, as is the case with any behaviour, determined by features of his or her personality. There are such problempatients who show a tendency of denying that they have a disease at all and there are others who know everything better than the doctor and there are yet others who are very scared. The doctor has to be able to recognize such patterns of behaviour in his patient and he has to approach him or her individually and emphatically.
