Abstract: Oral contraceptives induce folat deficiency when used for long-term therapy. Females often suffer from non characteristic symptoms which are signs of deficiency related to the intermediate metabolism. Due to the recommendation of the WHO it becomes evident that folate supplementation in form of pure folic acid needs to be given. The changed conditions of the gastro-intestinal tract and resorption of folic acid in the common population requires external supplementation in cases of treatment with contraceptives.
