Holistic approaches to cancer: an overview of the work of the Bristol Cancer Help Centre - its conception, development and rationale

Abstract: Cancer services in the developed world have become increasingly technological over recent years. Furthermore there seems to be a limit to the improvements in survival for various cancers that have been achieved, though obviously there are still developing areas. One aspect Of cancer care that has not been ideal is the more personal There has until recently been insuffizient attention given to the balance between quantity and quality of life. The hospice movement addressed quality of dying, but was unable to address fully the quality of living with cancer. Ten years ago there was a particularly large vacuum in terms of quality of care and indeed in terms of finding hope in hopeless circumstances. This situation has certainly changed for the better in this country, and the Bristol Cancer Help Centre has played its part in this change.
