Abstract: Argues that empirical evidence indicates a psychopathogenic model of "occupational cramps" OCs, as opposed to the implicitly pejorative term "occupational neuroses." OCs are painful muscular contractions, mostly involving the S's hand(s), that develop chiefly in writers and musical instrument players. OCs are divided into 3 forms: simple (limited to the muscles involved in the S's occupation), extended (i.e., to other unconnected activities), and symptomatic (occurring as part of another, chiefly compulsive, psychopathology). Three case histories illustrate these forms of OC. Ss were all successfully treated with psychotherapies, including autogenic training and psychoanalysis, while resisting medical and pharmacological treatments.
Note: psychotherapy & psychopathogenic model of occupational cramps; writers & musical instrument players
