Abstract: This paper presents a description of the use of song (the combination of music and lyrics) in grief therapy with members of the White Mountain Apache Tribe in Cibecue, Arizona. The author is a non-Indian and does not speak the Apache language. This, and several other hindrances in communication, necessitated a tool to facilitate verbal and emotional expression of grief for those referred for relief of somatic symptoms which had no organic etiology. Songs, specifically dealing with the death of various family members were written by the author, and used to facilitate grief therapy in a clinical setting.
