A research classification of doctoral dissertation in music therapy and related areas from 1945 to 1985 |
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and classify doctoral dissertations in music therapy and related areas of study from 1945 through 1985. Two hundred and fourty dissertations were identified from the Dissertation Abstracts International and its indexes and the American Doctoral Dissertations. Dissertations were further classified acording to research type, decade, population/topics, universities, and gender of author. Results showed a) There werefew examples of historical research in doctoral research. b) 95 % of the dissertations were completed wihtin experimental and descriptive research modes. c) The most frequently researched populations were mentally retarded children, university students and normal children. d) The University of Kansas, and Florida State University produced the highest percentages of doctoral dissertations. e) Within the top five research producing universities dissertation research within descriptive and experimental research modes was most prevalent. f) Males tended to design dissertations within the research categories of descriptive and experimental methods, women tend to design dissertations within the categories of experimental and descriptive methods. g) The largest amount of doctoral research took place from 1970 to 1979.
