Music therapy, affect modification, and therapeutic change: Towards an integrative model

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1989; 7: 55-62.

Abstract: Outlines theoretical considerations about the importance of affective behaviors in behavioral learning and change and the role of music therapy in providing affective change. A review of the literature on music therapy, music psychology, and cognitive and behavior research precedes an outline of a model of clinical practice for music therapy used in affect modification. Also examined are three of the most important areas (social learning, cognitive reorientation, emotional processing/learning) of application where affect modification can contribute significantly to therapeutic change. ABSTRACT 2: This paper attempts to outline the importance of affective behavior for behavioral learning and change, in addition to the role of music therapy as a method of affect modification in therapy. It is suggested that music therapy's unique contribution to the therapy process lies in incorporating the affective/motivational qualities in music perception into therapeutic experiences which would provide affective change as an important requirement for therapeutic change. Some variables of the process of music perception are discussed as well as considerations for clinical applications.
