"Johnny showed us the butterflies": The museum as a family therapy tool |
Journal/Book: Marriage and Family Review. 1989; 13: 131-150.
Abstract: Presents a theoretical framework for examining the relationship between museums and family therapy. Viewed from the perspectives of structural family, art, and play therapies, the museum can provide a non-threatening, fun environment for assigning and conducting innovative therapeutic tasks. Through such tasks, the museum can be used to stimulate awareness of existing behavior patterns and facilitate the experience of new ones for different family audiences. "Museum therapy" research should proceed in 5 interrelated areas: theoretical approaches, individual family studies, museum variables and relational awareness, objects as therapy tools, and pilot programming.
Note: framework for museums as family art & play & reminiscence therapy
