Abstract: One of the most important topics in mental health services is accountability. Historically, music therapists have documented treatment effectiveness through a variety of commonly accepted behavioral methods. Comprehensive assessment protocols derived from published research are not commonly utilized, opening the profession to criticism. This article focuses on assessment concerns pertaining to music-assisted relaxation services. Specific attention is devoted to four major theoretical perspectives on stress: (a) cognitive-behavioral theory, (b) developmental theory, (c) neurobiological theory, and (d) psychodynamic theory. Eleven published instruments are reviewed which focus on anxiety, depression, aversive and stressful events, and coping styles. While the profession of music therapy works towards developing its own standardized assessment batteries, current services must still adhere to the highest standards of practice. Such standards mandate that valid and reliable assessment instruments be included in comprehensive evaluations whenever possible. ABSTRACT 2: Focuses on assessment issues related to music-assisted relaxation (MAR) services. Attention is devoted to the following perspectives on stress and anxiety: cognitive-behavioral theory, developmental theory, neurobiological theory, and psychodynamic theory. 11 assessment instruments are reviewed that focus on anxiety, depression, aversive and stressful events, and coping styles. Therapists conducting MAR groups need to clearly understand the theoretical perspectives of anxiety and stress and choose the appropriate instrument to document treatment need and effectiveness.
