Anorexia - a women's illness - a sign of the times |
Journal/Book: Musiktherapeutische Umschau. 1989; 10: STUTTGART. G. Fischer Verlag. 105-131.
Abstract: The author traces the origins of anorexia nervosa and bulimia, from intrauterine susceptibility and preverbal dialogues to family structures and contemporary phenomena resulting in widespread occurrence of these disorders. The role of women, as well as that of the father, is included in the discussion, and a comparison is made between hysteria and anorexia. The significance of music therapy intervention, particularly the great influence exerted by rhythm (on these rhythm-disturbed women) is explained. Music-making possibilities, case notes and patients' reports help to bring anorexia nervosa into focus. (University Witten/Herdecke, 1192).
