Abstract: Discusses how 3 activity therapy modalities (music, occupational, and recreation therapies) can contribute to comprehensive treatment programs for chemical dependency. The prime contribution of activity therapy services lies in the nature of experiential education and in the application of insight gained in counseling sessions and discussion groups to practical real-life situations. Each modality is reviewed in respect to commonly identified objectives. Recreation therapy activities help to promote a healthy leisure lifestyle, assist in the development of interpersonal trust, improve specific communication skills, and promote group cohesions.
