A comparison of auditory and visual measures of field dependency in males and females |
Abstract: The relationship between the ability to disembed visual and auditory patterns was investigated by comparing scores on the Group Embedded Figure Test (Witkin, Oltman, Raskin, & Karp, 1971) and the Melody Recognition Sub-test of the Music Achievement Test (Colwell, 1970). Subjects were 17 male and 17 female college students. A significant correlation was not obtained between scores on the visual and auditory tests across both males and females combined. Gender comparisons on the Group Embedded Figures test showed men to be more "field independent" than women whereas scores on the Melody Recognition sub-test showed no significant differences between men and women.
