Music therapy in the treatment of the hearing-impaired |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1989; Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. National Association for Music Therapy. journal article.
Abstract: The author prefaces her description of clinical practice of music therapy with hearing-impaired clients by comparing blindness and deafness. She writes that blindness is "an environmental handicap" while deafness is a social disorder that keeps one from people. The parameters of hearing impairment are listed along with variables which extend beyond the classification. A six-point music therapy procedure in auditory training is listed, along with the uses of music in speech development. Finally, the author recounts the controversy surrounding the form of language to be used with hearing-impaired children. Methods of communication are listed along with music therapy procedures in language development. Assessments used in music therapy clinical practice with hearing-impaired clients both for auditory training and language development are appended to the paper.
