Acerca de la aversion de Freud por la musica: Un intento de explicacion. (Regarding Freud's aversion to music: An attempt at an explanation.) |
Journal/Book: Revista de Psicoanalisis. 1989; 46: 189-205.
Abstract: Discusses in psychoanalytic terms Freud's puzzling aversion to music (except for opera) and refers to Freud's letters to various correspondents including his wife during their engagement. Hypotheses on possible reasons for this strange quirk in Freud's artistic taste include a likely fear of "things heard but understood only in retrospect" (primal scene), especially with regard to instrumental music, and the mother-music connection (Freud's mother loved music) with its incestuous love/oedipal associations. Operas appealed to Freud possibly because they combine music with dramatic action and language, which he loved.
