A developmental music therapy approach for preschool hospitalized children

Abstract: Describes the selection of musical activities, materials, and music therapy approaches for hospitalized preschoolers (aged 2-4 yrs). Issues outlined are development in motor activity, production and discrimination of musical sounds, and social development in preschoolers. Music may be the ideal medium to help children cope with hospitalization because it is a natural part of their life and provides stimulation, an outlet for self-expression, and opportunities for motor response, without requiring verbalization.
