Journal/Book: Erfahrungsheilkunde. 1989; 38/9: 565-568.
Abstract: Subsequent to the presentation of fundamental inforrnation pertaining to pathophysiology as well as that regarding the regulation of bronchomotorial tonicity, a description of therapeutic measures is given. These measures are essentially based an the recommendations made in 1988 by the German League tor Combating Respiratory Illnesses (Deutsche Liga zur Bekämpfung der Atemwegserkrankungen). The sequence therapy advised by them for treatment of chronic obstructive bronchitis includes the use of expectorants. One vegetal expectorant is Escarol-5, which contains a purified extract of Asarum europaeurn. After outlining the molecular principle of action found to be common to the various individual effects, the results of previous clinical studies are then presented. In private studies using various dosages. a reduction in such symptoms as coughing., dyspnea, and susceptibility to infection could be observed as clinical effects. A long-term study over a period of several years was initiated, using a daily dosage of 2 x 15 mg. of phenylpropane derivatives.
