Abstract: In 122 patients with impaired potency and a history of low back pain, a special osteopathic examination technique revealed functional disturbances in the form of pelvic distortion. These functional-somatic disturbances are linked with myogelosis and impaired blood flow in the pelvic region. Such changes were found in only 10% of cases in a group of men (n = 51) with definitely psychogenic problems with potency and no low back pain, in 16% of a group of men (n = 57) with low back pain and no difficulties with sexual potency, and in none of a group (n = 55) with neither low back pain nor problems with potency. Reflexotherapy combined with osteopathic methods and acupuncture brought about in improvement in 70% of a group of 58 patients with a history of low back pain. The effects of reflexotherapy are discussed with reference to muscle relaxation and improvement of blood flow. It is recommended that reflexotherapy be applied as an adjuvant therapy when impotence has a vertebrogenic component.
