Abstract: Matthiessen presents the theoretical conditions and aspects which for the basis for the application of mistletoe preparations. The essential point of an organism is not that it consists of cells and molecules but its detail-transcending differentiation, the formation of transcending physiological and morphological structures and orders. Accordingly one must take the autonomic performance of organism into account, both with respect to the interpretation of the development of symptoms as well as to the development of therapeutic strategies. A corresponding epistemological problem results with regard to a qualitative Definition of the mistletoe as a holistic process against the background of the endeavour to trigger higher learning processes in the organism by not only addressing the modification of particular single mechanisms but also the general, higher level process of cancer formation. According to the studies quoted by Matthiessen, there are indications that a therapy with viscum album can prolong human life in cases of carcinomatous diseases. Because of patient heterogeneity in studies with largenumbers of patients, he pleads for an upgrading of N1-studies with the registration of a large number of intra-individual course parameters as an indispensable methodological complementation of the now prevailing nomothetical procedures. A lecture presenting known and new facts to doctors interested in cancer therapy with mistletoe preparations and offering aspects of an throposophic medicine which form the basis of mistletoe therapy to doctors specialised in other fields.
