Abstract: The irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common chronic gastrointestinal disorders in developed countries. The term irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) describes a cluster of chronic symptoms that include abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of any structural causes for the symptoms. A score system recognizing detailed case history, physical examination, and basic laboratory data is sufficient for positive diagnosis of IBS and the exclusion of organic diseases. The treatment of IBS with two different microbial products was studied in two separate clinical trials.A sterile suspension of autolyzed normal intestinal Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli of human origin was investigated in a randomized double blind placebo controlled clinical trial including 300 patients. The patients were treated orally during a period of two months. The general condition was improved in 86% by verum and in 56% by Placebo. The RACT final score of clinical data revealed positive effects in 86.6% by verum and in 70.0% by Placebo treatment (p < 0.001). Negative colon palpation findings were reduced by verum to 11 %, and by placebo to 29%. Stool consistency was normalized in 59% by verum and in 33% by Placebo.A suspension of viable cells and autolysate of normal intestinal Escherichia coli of human origin was used in another randomized double blind placebo study with 300 IBS patients. The patients received oral treatment during a period of two months. The general condition was improved in 83.9% by verum and in 70.7% by placebo. Positive effects were demonstrated in the final score of clinical data in 80% by verum and in 63 °/o by Placebo (p < 0.001). Negative colon palpation findings were decreased by verum to 11 %, and by placebo to 30%. Stool consistency was normalized in 57% by verum and in 37% by Placebo.
