Abstract: The diagnostic results of 941 patients with breast diseases of the gyn. department, University of Marburg from 1980-1984 were evaluated retrospectively.A comparison was done between clinical examination, mammography, thermography and ultrasonography. It could be shown that the mammography is the most secure method (87 % sensitivity) and the ultrasound has the same result in large tumors. The size of the tumor determines the limits of the single diagnostic method. In small tumors below 5 mm 0, the mammography has a > 20 % higher sensitivity opposite to all other methods.High tumor-density improves the sensitivity of all diagnostics, except of thermography. High breast density, operation and breast infections worsen all diagnostic results.Whereas the sensitivity of thermography is not particularly high (56 %), it has proved to yield good results with respect to specificity in undifferentiated tumors (71 %).
