Abstract: The effects of alpha-irradiation (241Am) in the doserange from 4 9.10-8 to 3 4.10-4 Grey were investigated using an established renal epithelial cell line (MDCK-cells) and an epithelial tumor cell line (EATC). The major findings were a diminished proliferation of MDCK-cells in combination with an enhanced cellular translational activity. EATC displayed DNA single and double strandbreaks when exposed to 241Am. Unexpectedly no ionisation induced lipid peroxidation signs could be detected within the cytoplsmic compartment of MDCK-cells. Furthemore no evidence for any cell injury process was present. On the contrary following alpha-irradiation elevated activity of Superoxyddismutase (SOD) an enzyme beeing crucial for scavenging superoxide anions and thus preventing oxygen-radical induced cell damage and ameliorating inflammation was found.
