Abstract: Describes a music therapy assessment procedure that employs song choice, story-to-music, and instrumental improvisation tasks to assess anxiety, decision making, reality orientation, abstracting ability, self-image, emotional constriction, frustration tolerance, attention span, ego boundaries, and thought processes. A case example is presented of a 12-yr-old boy admitted with oppositional disorder and borderline personality disorder and exhibiting psychological immaturity and strong dependency needs in his task performance.
