Abstract: Since 1979, the fields of medicine and music have experienced a renaissance in the appreciation of music as an important component in the world of medicine. Research has led to the increasing use of musical applications in medical hospitals. Although music therapists have been informed of the long history of such applications, their lack of training and expertise in medical procedures has discouraged participation in the new reintegration movement. This annotated review of resources intended to inform music therapists of the current process and to encourage more research in medical applications. Literature describing the history of music and medicine is followed by descriptions of activity by professional organizations, additional research reports, a section describing clinical programs for injured musicians, descriptions of three hospital programs, and clinical reports found in music therapy publications. Specific suggestions are made for improving music therapy medical research and education, and for expanding the theoretical basis for music therapy in medicine.
