Abstract: The results of research into the practice of music therapy with the mentally handicapped in the Netherlands are presented. First, a theoretical distinction is made between three different ways of using music in the health service of the mentally handicapped: music therapy (referring to psychotherapy), the use of music in planned change with six music therapists (using a decision theoretical methodology) are brought together in a questionnaire, which enables the therapist to describe his own method. A comprehensive study into the reliability of the questionaire was made, studying interobserver agreement in 18 music therapy fragments. Analyses of 112 completed questionaires (using among other things regression analysis and factor analysis) revealed 5 methods, two for individual therapy and three for group therapy. In the last section, the relations between the levels of working with music are discussed.
