Preliminary Music

Abstract: This paper describes individual musical work with three children of five years. These half hours were started as a preliminary exploratory sound-play period to precede formal instrumental tuition with a final assessment of musicality, creativity and instrumental preference. However, the aim changed as the children showed such a remarkable teleological drive towards wholeness through playing through their own personal problems with the use of the therapist as 'joker'. These were (l) adaptation to her mother's pregnancy by step-father (2) jealousy of younger favoured sister and unhelpful environmental factors overcome (3) development from timid overmotheredness to peer group acceptance and grade improvement.
