Abstract: This paper describes the development of music therapy training and practice in the UK. The wide ranging application of music therapy skills is explained. The implementation of Juliette Alvin's vision of music uniting beauty, science and compassion is discussed, with examples from work in a psychiatric clinic. The use of music therapy to maintain dignity in the elderly mentally ill is also discussed. Possible ways of recovering self esteem and finding creativity in the damaged personality are explored. Quotations from Shakespeare, Alvin, and Koestler are given. The powerful effect of music used to treat illness is identified. This paper is available from the BSMT. Price ú3.
