Report: Status of public school music therapy

Abstract: This report is the result of a survey designed to determine the status of music therapy in the public schools five years after an inservice thrust, a product of a "Special Project: A National Inservice Training Model for Educational Personnel Providing Music Education/Therapy for Severely Profoundly Handicapped Children," 1980-1983. Specific information was gathered and analyzed relative to the degree of prevalence of music therapy positions in public schools in the United States, current hiring requirements and practices, job descriptions of public school music therapists employed by the public schools. Results of the study indicated the need for a new inservice thrust to educate school personnel, the need to seek alternative routes for state teacher certification for music therapists, and the need to establish a networking/support group for public school music therapists.
