Abstract: Describes the unique needs of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient, possible music therapy goals, and ethical issues involved in treatment. Psychological and social issues of AIDS patients are presented, including the psychological stages of acceptance of the disease and the stigma associated with the illness, especially for a homosexual AIDS patient. Specific stresses are also associated with the medical stages of AIDS and the side effects of some of the treatments. The goals for the psychological treatment of AIDS patients are described, including the area of psychoneuroimmunology. Ethical issues that affect music therapists and their patients with AIDS are explored. ABSTRACT 2: This paper describes the unique needs of the AIDS patient, including psychological stages of acceptance of the disease, and current treatments, including hypotheses in the area of psychoneuroimmunology. Also explored are goals of music therapy, and ethical issues for music therapists working with AIDS patients.
