The effect of contingent music in combination with a bell pad on enuresis of a mentally retarded adult |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1988; 25: 103-109.
Abstract: Assessed the effect of contingent music alone or combined with a bell pad on enuresis in a 21-yr-old mentally retarded female with an IQ of 32. Results show an increase from a baseline of 43-86% dry days after treatment. The music treatment alone appeared to be more effective than the music paired with the bell pad. ABSTRACT 2: The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of contingent music alone or combined with a bell pad on enuresis in a mentally retarded adult. A 21-year-old retarded female with an IQ of 32 served as the subject. Treatment I consisted of an improvisational music session contingent upon a dry bed in the morning. During Treatment 2, a bell pad was used during the night. If the bed was dry in the morning, the music session was also implemented as in Treatment I. This was followed by a return to baseling. The treatment was then generalized to allow the entire staff to become involved in the program. Results showed an increase from a baseline of 43% to 86% dry days after treatment. The music treatment alone appeared to be more effective than the music paired with the bell pad.
