Experiences in Improvisation |
Abstract: The paper explores my subjective experience of improvisation in three setting: l. a professional "avant-garde" jazz ensemble 2. a group of music therapy students 3. a therapy group for severely mentally handicapped adults The nature of the improvisation process is described briefly, and relates to the raison d'etre of each group. My subjective perception of my own role in each group is described and explored in terms of therapist/musician/student. There is some discussion of the apparent contradiction of improvising "freely" - and it is suggested that even in the most unstructured musical settings, the necessity for a concensus of musical language asserts itself, regardless of the musicians' technical responses.
