Journal/Book: Australian Music Therapy Association Conference Proceedings. 1988; Australia. Australian Music Therapy Association 2/31 Abercrombie street 3103 Deepdene Australia. Collected Works.
Abstract: This paper raises a number of issues associated with the long running movement in England of moving mentally handicapped people out of institutions into the community. Also examined is the importance of continuing music therapy program for two blind mentally handicapped men in England who recently moved into a small house in the community. Was it a positive move for these two individuals, or were they recieving more services relevant to their needs in the hospital?. The concept of "community" and "community care" is discussed within a historical perspective. It was felt that aspects of the music therapy program concerened with improvisations were usefull towards assisting them in a more independent community life.
