Abstract: In a randomised double-blind trial the efficacy and tolerance of Ginkgo biloba extract.(GBE) were compared to that of pentoxifyllin in the treatment of 27 patients suffering from peripheral chronic arterial occlusive disease (Fontaine stage II b). The patients were administered either 160 mg GBE or 1200 mg pentoxifyllin daily for 24 weeks..Pain-free walking distance improved significantly on treatment with GBE as well as with pentoxifyllin. Maximum walking distance also increased significantly. The pain incurred on walking became more bearable during the course of treatment. Notice- able in this connection is the decrease in serum lactate level upon treatment.
