Effect of certain volatile oils on ejaculated human spermatozoa

Abstract: Effect of seven volatile oils (viz, oils of clove, peppermint, ajowan, dill, basil, and cinnamon, as also eugenol) and four fixed oils (groundnut, coconut and vegetable and pure ghee i.e., clarified butter) was studied on human spermatozoa in vitro. The volatile oils were found to be instantaneously spermicidal in varying dilutions. Their action was dependent on concentration and time. On the other hand, none of the fixed oils showed a spermicidal action, even when used in the pure form.
