Abstract: In angloamerican investigations, POMS and PGWI are widely used to assess emotional wellbeing as a component of quality of life. In order to compare results internationally, psychometric analyses of both scales also in german populations are necessary.Based an responses of 143 young healthy subjects to a german 35-fitem version of POMS, a german 22-fitem version of the PGWI and other life satisfaction scales, the present study analysed item characteristics, reliability and validity of both scales. For the POMS, the factorial structure of the german version was found to reflect the english version. Internal consistency coefficients ranged about a = 0.90. Factorial validity was acceptable, correlation coefficients with life satisfaction scales as indicators of convergent validity ranged about r = 0.50.Internal consistency of the PGWI was about a = 0.80, convergent validity coefficients ranged about r = 0.65. Factorial structure, however, only partially reflected the original subscales and factorial validity was less satisfactory.Psychometric analyses suggest the use of german POMS and PGWI versions in assessing emotional wellbeing. Further studies in healthy reference populations and in patients over time are needed to recommend the use of POMS and PGWI to assess the emotional component of quality of life in clinical trials.
