Gum guggul (Commiphora mukul)-The success story of an ancient insight leading to a modern discovery

Abstract: The development of gum guggul (C. mukul) as a potent hypolipidemic agent by Indian scientists offers a highly fascinating and inspiring account of how the wisdom and insight of ancient Ayurvedic experts (like Sushruta, 600 b,c.) could be translated not only in terms of modern scientific interpretation, but through experimental and clinical investigations leading to the discovery of a new anti-cholesterol drug from a plant source. In this review, a chronological account is presented of the evolution of gum guggul as a commercially viable hypolipidemic agent. The future line of scientific investigations an this versatile plant is also suggested.
