Abstract: A study was carried out an the effect of gum guggulu in 40 patients of hyperlipidemia. Twenty patients (group 1) were administered 4.5 g of purified gum guggulu in two divided doses daily for 16 wk. While the control group (group I1-20 patients) received placebo in the form of lactose powder in similar gelatine capsules for the same duration. The blood samples were collected initially and at the end of 4th, 8th and 16th wk. Serum cholesterol decreased by 7.8, 15.78 and 21.75 per cent at the end of 4th, 8th (P C 0.05) and 16th (P < 0.01) wk respectively in the drug-treated group. Serum triglyceride levels also decreased by 6.7, 17.1 and 27.1 per cent at the end of 4th, 8th and 16th wk (P C 0.05) respectively. The ETDL cholesterol showed a gradual increase by about 35.8 per cent at the end of 16 wk (P< 0.01). Similarly, VLDL and LDL cholesterol showed significant decrease at all the levels of study. The drug was found to be safe and highly effective in lowering various lipid fractions known to be atherogenic, alone with a significant rise in TTDL cholesterol.
