Journal/Book: International Disability Studies. 1988; 10(3): 140-142.
Abstract: In the past few years modalities of traditional Chinese ìrehabilitative therapy have changed from an experimental approach ìtowards the shaping of a modernized and scientific system. The ìlandmark of this process is characterized by adoption of ìscientific methods in the appraisal of efficacy, provision of ìexperimental evidence to unveil the mechanisms for the treatments ìand development of new modalities by innovation with modern ìtechnology. Recent advances in clinical and experimental studies ìon acupuncture, Chinese massage and manipulation, qigong, and Tai ìJi exercise are reviewed, with a focus on new findings in ìphysiological mechanisms and effects on anti-senility. Comments ìare made on new modalities such as 'physical therapy on ìacupoints'. Progress in the use of qigong (meditation therapy) in ìtapping mental potentials and remediating mental deficiency is ìalso reported.
