Abstract: This paper discusses the place of music in African Culture. Music is a central factor which guides an individuals mind, beginning from the time of conception in the womb, and finally to the tomb. To these people music expresses attitudes, fears, beliefs, and thoughts of the individuals in that society. The three main groups of instruments used in African music, percussion, strings, and wind, are discussed, using as examples of each, the drum, lekembe, and maraca's. These instruments in particular have a significant role in the therapeutic uses of African music.
