The effect of self-monitoring on positive comments given by music therapy students' coaching peers |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1987; 24: 54-75.
Abstract: Presents 2 models for music therapy with overcontrolled offenders. The cases of 2 Black men (aged 26 and 30 yrs) who had committed uncharacteristically violent crimes that they associated with loss of control attributed to alcohol or alcohol and psychosis are presented. In both cases, music provided a context uniquely conducive to treatment. Music allowed the flexibility to introduce challenge while sustaining support. Intense musical expression was associated by the Ss with a positive cathartic experience without the need for designated emotional content. ABSTRACT 2: This study examined the effect of self-monitoring on the number and ratio of positive comments given by music therapy students to peers, when serving as coaches for the development of social interactive skills in a clinical simulation laboratory. Twenty-eight preinternship students served as subjects, each subject coaching a classmate. At different times throughout the study, students individually listened to audio tapes of the previous week's coaching session and counted their own positive, negative and neutral comments. Results indicated that the total proportion of positive to negative comments for all students began and continued at a high rate primarily because few negative comments were given. However, for that part of the class whose initial number of positive comments was considered low, an increase in the number of positive comments was apparent. For students whose intitial number of positive comments was high, the results of the treatment were mixed. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the average number of approvals given during baseline and during self-monitoring.
