Abstract: Presents examples to illustrate the relationships between depression and art. It is indicated that poets, novelists, and musicians have vividly portrayed depression, usually from personal experience. Also, relationships between depression and art play a role in certain theories of creativity. There are various creative therapies designed for treatment of depression (e.g., encouraging the patient to paint or draw) to reactivate the nondominant hemisphere of the brain.
