The use of music therapy to increase language age in institutionalized mentally retarded female adults

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to develop a protocol which music therapists might utilize in increasing language skills in the mentally retarded and to compare the effectiveness of this protocol with traditional speech/language therapy. Twenty-two mentally retarded female adults were randomly assigned to a control group or an experimental group. The control group received traditional speech/language therapy and the experimental group received a music therapy adaptation of traditional speech/language therapy. The dependent variable was the Preschool Language Scale, and an Analysis of Covariance of the posttest scores with the pretest as covariate revealed no significant difference between posttest scores of the experimental and control groups.
