A philosophy of music in the therapeutic relationship |
Abstract: The problem of this paper was twofold. The first section examined the qualities evident in a competent therapist, and studied the nature of the therapeutic relationships that these therapists have with their patients. The second section showed how music complements the qualities of a competent therapist, and how music in the role of language, functions in an effective therapeutic relationship. The method of this treatise was to review extant literature in the fields of concern: psychotherapeutic, behavioral and humanistic psychologies; phenomelogical and existential philosophies; the process and elements of therapy; qualities of a therapist and the elements of a therapeutic relationship; the philosophies of music as a language, and music as it relates to a music therapist and the therapeutic relationship; and further, to propose an analysis of the literature that leads to the theory of music therapy.
