The Diagnostic Use of Music Therapy Techniques with Adults Exhibiting Dementia |
Journal/Book: Australian Music Therapy Association Conference Proceedings.. 1987; AT. Australian Music Therapy Association. Collected Works.
Abstract: This paper describes and discusses the assessment of focal symptoms of dementia involving intellectual and motor changes. The approach used was developed as a result of recent observation of the diagnostic approach at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Centre, New York. The results of this technique are compared with those of assessment of mental functioning, using a reliable, validated instrument. No significant correlation was found between the two methods. Difficulties of standard testing procedure, the desirability of utilising music therapy techniques in testing adults with dementia, and development of a reliable, validated music therapy measure are discussed.
