An assessment of the rhythmic abilities of Kindergarten Children

Abstract: The researcher designed a rating scale which has the potential to determine rhythmic ability, based upon a developmental sequence of rhythmic patterns. The Primary Measures of Music Audiation (Gordon, 1979) was administered to 16 children as a control for rhythmic aptitude. The children were then tested with the sequence of rhythm patterns. Two raters evaluated the results using the scale designed by the researchers. Scores from the scale were correlated with the PMMA. The results indicated significant differences between the children's performance in duple and triple meter, with higher correlations occuring between rhythmic aptitude and triple meter.
