Abstract: Describing the music emerging from the music therapy situation can be a means of gaining access to the patient. Working with the simplified example of a patient's music, two means of decription are compared: a) decription by means of technical terms, and b) description by association. The mental processes that lead to the description of music by association are then examined. The results of this form the basis of a discussion of how music description by association can be made further use of in music therapy.
