Abstract: This report demonstrates how a child's disability may cause thoughts of failure, guilt and helplessness in the parent, may emphasise differences in the personalities and attitudes of parents and relatives, and may interfere with parents' life plans and stability of relationship. A baby displays increasing evidence, from the age of six months, of something wrong with his responses to those around him and to the environment. The strain of management falls mainly on the mother who almost gives way after years of struggle untill a family friend intervenes.
