The ontogenesis of Hearing - Possible consequences for development support and therapy |
Journal/Book: Musiktherapeutische Umschau. 1986; 7: STUTTGART. 93-101.
Abstract: Since it is physiologically unnatural for premature babies to begin life in an incubator, there are particular risks attached. The author reports on a research programme in which, on the basis of observation of intrauterine behaviour and the ontogenesis of the organ of hearing and its potential for transmitting sound, the reduction of these risks by means of acoustic stimulation is being investigated. The mother's voice is played to the babies in the incubator. Observation of behaviour and biological functioning indicates that there are changes, whose full signifance has still to be evaluated. This kind of "communication" certainly has a positive influence on the relationship between mother and child.
